YOUTH SYSTEM AND SERVICES

In the Scouting system, youth work is centred on helping young people develop character, leadership, citizenship, life skills, and service through active participation. The following are common types of youth work and how they fit into Scouting:

STREET ACTIONS

Activities carried out in public places to educate or serve the community.

Examples: road safety awareness, environmental sanitation, anti-drug campaigns, tree planting, and neighbourhood clean-ups.

CAMPAIGNS

Organised efforts to promote a cause or create awareness.

Examples: health campaigns, peace campaigns, climate action, literacy promotion, and Scout membership drives.

ONLINE ACTIVITIES

Digital programmes that engage young people through technology.

Examples: virtual Scout meetings, webinars, online leadership training, social media awareness campaigns, quizzes, and digital badge activities.

TRAINING AND NON-FORMAL EDUCATION SESSIONS

Learning experiences outside the traditional classroom that build practical knowledge and skills.

Examples: first aid, leadership, communication, navigation, entrepreneurship, and life skills training.

WORKSHOPS

Interactive sessions focused on developing specific skills.

Examples: pioneering, knotting, camping skills, public speaking, project management, and environmental conservation.

VOLUNTEERING IN THE COMMUNITY

Service activities that improve the well-being of others.

Examples: visiting orphanages, supporting elderly people, blood donation drives, community development projects, and disaster preparedness.

HUMANITARIAN ACTION

Responding to the needs of people affected by hardship or emergencies.

Examples: disaster relief, fundraising for vulnerable groups, distribution of food and clothing, refugee support, and emergency response assistance.

ART, MUSIC, AND PERFORMANCE EVENTS

Creative activities that encourage self-expression, teamwork, and cultural appreciation.

Examples: campfire performances, Scout band displays, drama, cultural dances, talent shows, poetry, and exhibitions.

COUNSELLING AND SUPPORT SESSIONS

Programmes that promote emotional, mental, and social well-being.

Examples: mentoring, career guidance, peer support groups, conflict resolution, and personal development discussions.

OUTDOOR YOUTH WORK, CAMPS, AND DETACHED YOUTH WORK

Activities conducted in outdoor environments that promote adventure and learning by doing.

Examples: camping, hiking, expeditions, wide games, survival skills, canoeing, community exploration, and outreach to young people who are not actively involved in organised groups.

Lead by sample

Before you try to correct others and teach them how to fix their mistakes, maybe you should take a look at yourself first.

LEAD WITH PURPOSE

That is a really powerful way to look at leadership, and honestly, you've hit on a truth that a lot of traditional bosses completely miss.

​True leadership isn't about creating followers or dictating every single move; it’s a cycle of empowerment. If you train someone but micromanage them or strip away their freedom to make decisions, you aren't building a "leader of tomorrow" you're just training an assistant to follow orders.

​When you deny someone freedom in their development, a few things happen that hurt their leadership potential:

​No Room for Accountability: If they don't have the freedom to make a choice, they can never truly take ownership of the outcome—whether it's a success or a failure.

​Stifled Innovation: Critical thinking and problem-solving only grow when someone has the space to try their own approach, even if it looks a little different from yours.

​Loss of Confidence: True leaders need to trust their own gut. If they are constantly waiting for permission, that trust never develops.

​The best leaders act more like coaches. They give you the foundation, the vision, and the safety net, but then they step back and give you the autonomy to actually lead.

The rule of thumb in Scouting:

Plan with the scouts, not just for them. The more input they have, the better the program runs.

NOTICE

Plan backward to know where you are going, but execute forward to make it happen. A vision without a timeline is just a dream, and a timeline without a vision is just a treadmill.
